The experiment
The Assembly is not only a seminar. It is a social experiment in which waiting is administered — and everyone who enters holds a role.
Six papers will be read. Between them, the room will be made to wait: at the door, at a ticket desk, before a form, in a silent queue, before a chair that is never offered, and before a wall that collects what remains unfinished. The point is not humiliation. It is to make visible what power usually hides — delay without an author, a queue without an explanation, refreshment that arrives as mystery rather than hospitality.
Nobody only watches. A ticket is not a souvenir; it is a part. Presenter, facilitator, patron, filmmaker, press, audience — each role is a way of being placed inside the day’s tempo. To register is to agree to that placement. The six academic sessions stay real; the interludes are the experiment’s apparatus.
What the day stages becomes documentary material. The film is optional and separately consented on the registration form. No-camera markers are honoured. The experiment itself — the agreement to wait, and to see waiting done — is the condition of entry.
How waiting is administered
Six devices, staged through the day. The timetable is on Day; this is the idea behind it.
I · The door
The advertised start passes. A notice: will begin shortly. Chairs are provided. Opening words name what the room has already felt.
II · The ticket
Numbers drawn at entry. Questions and coffee follow an unexplained order. Some numbers are never called. Nobody is refused.
III · The form
Tea is not free. An Application to Be Heard is filed at a slow desk. Some forms are stamped DEFERRED. The pending wall of paper becomes the installation. What arrives is unlabelled — mysterious food, no menu. Dietary needs declared at registration are honoured without breaking the silence for others.
IV · The canteen
Lunch opens late by design. Trays by lot, not by queue. Dishes have numbers, not names. One table is set and never served. Seconds are promised “shortly”.
V · The silent queue
Ten minutes before a door marked OFFICE. No phones. The door opens on an empty room. A short debrief. Later, a clock that is visible and wrong.
VI · The chair & the wall
How the day ends with an empty seat is the closing argument. One card each: I am still waiting for ______. The pending wall stays after the chairs are stacked.

The film
Documentary filming is optional. Consent is separate on the form. Markers that decline the camera are honoured.
